Munich is one of the best cities in Germany for Christmas markets. Almost every district has its own, and each one has a different feel, from the big Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz to a medieval market, a market inside the Residenz palace and the alternative Tollwood winter festival. This guide covers the Munich Christmas markets in 2026: the official dates, what makes each one special, and how to get around. For the official overview, see the Munich tourism board’s Christmas market page.
⚡ Quick answer

🎄 The Main Markets
Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz
This is Munich’s best-known and traditional market, set around the Neues Rathaus and spreading into the pedestrian zone. A Christkindlmarkt has been held in Munich for centuries, and Munich’s tourism board notes that a separate nativity-scene market was held here as early as 1757. The market has been on Marienplatz since 1972. A second part of the market stands on the nearby Rindermarkt. It runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026, and you can book a guided tour if you want the history.
Christmas village in the Residenz
The Weihnachtsdorf sits in the Kaiserhof, the largest inner courtyard of the Munich Residenz, so it’s sheltered from wind and snow. It’s one of the earliest to open, on 16 November, and runs until 22 December. The entrance is on Residenzstraße, near Odeonsplatz.
Medieval market at Wittelsbacherplatz
For something different, the medieval Christmas market and Advent show on Wittelsbacherplatz runs from 20 November to 23 December 2026, with a medieval theme that appeals to families and anyone who likes a more unusual setting.
Tollwood winter festival
Tollwood turns the Theresienwiese, the Oktoberfest grounds, into an alternative winter festival with its own markets, food and shows. Its Christmas markets close on 23 December, and the whole festival ends with a New Year’s Eve party. Check tollwood.de for the start date and program.
Pink Christmas and the district markets
Pink Christmas is Munich’s queer Christmas market, running from 20 November to 20 December 2026. Many districts also have their own market, such as Neuhausen at Rotkreuzplatz and Haidhausen at Weißenburger Platz. These are smaller and quieter than the city-center markets, and often popular with locals.
🍷 What to Eat and Drink
- Glühwein: hot spiced wine, sold at nearly every stall, usually in a mug with a small deposit (Pfand) that you get back when you return it.
- Feuerzangenbowle: mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar loaf set alight, with its own market in Munich this season.
- Bratwurst and roasted almonds: the classic market snacks, found at most markets.
🚆 Getting Around Munich’s Christmas Markets
Most of the central markets are within walking distance of each other, and public transport is the easiest way to reach the rest. A Deutschlandticket (€63 a month in 2026) covers Munich’s S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses, which is worth it if you’re staying a while. For day trips from Munich, a Bayern Ticket costs €34 for one person in 2026. See our public transport guide for tourists for how tickets work, and use the DB Navigator app to plan routes.
💡 Tips for Visiting
- Visit on a weekday if you can. The central markets are busiest on weekends and in the evenings.
- Check each market’s hours. They vary, and some official sources hadn’t published 2026 hours yet.
- Bring some cash. Many stalls prefer it.
- Watch your bag. Crowded markets attract pickpockets, so use a zipped bag.
- Combine with a day trip. Munich is a good base for Nuremberg, Salzburg and Neuschwanstein.
